Artist Statement
I am a fine artist who has recently added graphic design to my creative mix. This allows me to combine the physical aspect and knowledge of the fine arts with computer technical expertise. As an island girl, my work is heavily influenced by various aspects of my island’s cultural diversity. Trinidad and Tobago’s multicultural nature is unparalleled; a nation where people of different religions, races and ethnicities all come together respecting and participating in one another’s traditions creating one big “melting pot” of cultures. There is no other way to describe it than, beautiful, colourful chaos.
My body of work in both painting and graphic design executes the importance of colour while highlighting the underlying theme of strength and empowerment. My design process has always been a big part of the general ideas, execution and outcome of each piece made. As a graphic designer, research is a key element when trying to understand clients’ needs. This is necessary to understand what the client’s goal is; to get an idea of his/her previous branding, or to even come up with a process that works best for that particular company.
This research technique also drives my fine art projects. Often times, when artists are given projects, they are found in positions where they are rushing to create explanations or to add meaning to their work long after their projects are completed. However, I find that useless, and deceitful. I prefer to fully understand the meaning of my work and research what media, colour palette and sizes I intend to use and the reasons behind them before I actually begin creating my pieces. This gives my art a goal from the beginning and allows me to project that meaning into the piece while making it. Furthermore, I strongly believe that emotions can be projected onto a blank canvas as I’ve seen my feelings come to life through my art.
As long as my work can lift spirits and put a smile on someone's face in these uncertain times, I would be satisfied that I have succeeded in some small measure to brighten an embellish some positive colour into an individual's day.
My work is designed to add colour, strength and positivity to this dark and gloomy world today.
